Music was a big part of canal boat life. There was always at least one person on the canal boat who made up songs about the places they went, the people they met, and the things they did. The songs weren't written down. They were boatmen, not songwriters, after all. But the tradition continues on the Volunteer, the canal boat at Providence Metropark in Grand Rapids, Ohio. On June 10th, all three regular canal boat cruises at The Canal Experience at Providence Metropark (12:30PM, 2:00PM, and 3:30PM) will be interpreted with original songs of the Miami and Erie Canal and a few songs from the Erie and Ohio canals.
