Christmas on the Towpath
© 2024 by Russ Franzen
The winter days have fallen out on the old canal.
Boats are docked, crews are gone, the mules in the barn.
Snow drifts softly on this quiet path-way
Along the old towpath on Christmas Day.

Walking to the church on Christmas Day
Singing carols with our neighbors along the way,
And we have to move over for a horse-drawn sleigh
Along the old towpath on Christmas Day.

The canal’s iced over and children are skating
And a bonfire is burning, keeping warm those a’waiting
Their turn on the ice, keeping the cold breeze at bay
Out on the old towpath on Christmas Day.

There’s snow on the ground, snow on the trees,
Here on the towpath, a feeling of peace.
“Happy Christmas to all” to each other we say
Along the old towpath on Christmas Day.
